Council of Athabascan Tribal Government

Our Elders, our teachers

Anyone who attends any of our gatherings will notice the respect that we give our Elders. We always begin with an opening prayer and it is an Elder that delivers it. In doing so, the elder will often speak in his own language. The Elders are first to speak and no one cuts them off. When the time comes that the food is served, before anyone else can get in line, young people will fill them with whatever is being served - moose, salmon, caribou, white fish, beaver, duck, porcupine, geese - and carry them to the Elders. We honor our Elders in this way not only because it is our tradition, but because we recognize that they are the ones who carry knowledge that no one else has, and we need to learn from them. On these pages, we honor just a few of our Elders, but plan to add more, so check back.
