It is often said that the young are the leaders of tomorrow.
For this to actually happen, young people need to be cared for. They need
education, good health care, love and spiritual guidance; they need to
believe that when they grow up, they will be able to make a good living
so that they can provide themselves and the young that will follow. In
the country that we call home, when we speak of an ability to make a good
living, we are speaking both in terms of the western economy and also of
our own traditional way of life, which is build upon the land, the rivers,
creeks and lakes that water it and upon the animals, birds and fish sustained
by it. For countless centuries, our young have been sustained in this land
through the guidance of the tribes. The challenges we face today are far
different than those met by earlier tribal leaders, but the best hope we
have for successfully grappling with those challenges remains in the heart
and mind of the people, best expressed through our own tribal governments.
We want our homeland to always be a place where our young -some pictured
with links below - will want to stay and raise new generations.
