Position Summary
The Early Head Start Home Visitor provides weekly planned home visits and twice-monthly socialization experiences to each pregnant woman, infant, toddler, and their families enrolled in the Early Head Start program. This position works under the supervision of the Early Head Start Director to deliver comprehensive early childhood development services in Arctic Village.
Primary Responsibilities
Home Visiting Services
- Conduct weekly planned home visits with enrolled families
- Organize and facilitate twice-monthly group socialization activities
- Deliver developmentally appropriate early learning activities
- Support parent-child interaction and bonding
- Promote school readiness and healthy development
Family Support & Education
- Provide parent education on child development and parenting
- Incorporate native culture and language elements into services
- Support families in achieving their goals and aspirations
- Connect families to community resources and services
- Conduct developmental screenings and assessments
Program Compliance & Documentation
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of home visits
- Track child development progress and outcomes
- Ensure compliance with Head Start Performance Standards
- Participate in program planning and evaluation
- Attend required training and professional development
Community Collaboration
- Build relationships with families and community members
- Collaborate with health and social service providers
- Participate in community events and activities
- Respect and honor Gwich’in culture and traditions
- Support tribal sovereignty and self-determination
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or willingness to obtain within 18 months
- Valid Alaska driver’s license (or ability to obtain)
- Ability to pass background check including fingerprinting
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Cultural sensitivity and respect for Alaska Native traditions
- Ability to work independently in a rural setting
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field
- Previous experience working with infants, toddlers, and families
- Knowledge of Gwich’in language and culture
- Experience with home visiting programs or Head Start
- Training in infant/toddler development
- First Aid and CPR certification
Working Conditions
- Position based in Arctic Village, Alaska
- Home visits conducted in family homes and community settings
- May require travel to other villages in service area
- Some evening and weekend work for family events
- Work in rural Alaska conditions and weather
- Must be comfortable working in diverse home environments
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry educational materials and supplies (up to 25 lbs)
- Ability to sit on floors and engage in active play with children
- Ability to travel by snow machine, ATV, or small aircraft as needed
- Comfortable working in various temperature conditions
- Able to walk on uneven terrain and in various weather conditions
