A Need for Healing

As CATG developed its healthcare services, it became clear that physical health alone was not enough. The communities were experiencing significant challenges related to behavioral health, substance abuse, and historical trauma.

Understanding the Challenges

The mid-1980s brought unfamiliar health crises to the Yukon Flats. The disruption of traditional ways of life, the legacy of colonization, and rapid social change had taken a toll on community wellness. Issues like substance abuse, suicide, and domestic violence demanded attention.

A Comprehensive Approach

CATG recognized that healing requires more than just treating symptoms. The organization developed a comprehensive behavioral health program that:

  • Provides counseling and mental health services
  • Addresses substance abuse through prevention and treatment
  • Incorporates traditional healing practices and cultural activities
  • Focuses on building resilience in individuals and communities
  • Supports families affected by trauma

Cultural Foundation

Healing must be rooted in culture. CATG’s behavioral health programs integrate Gwich’in cultural values, traditional knowledge, and language revitalization efforts. This cultural foundation helps community members reconnect with their identity and sources of strength.

Prevention and Early Intervention

In addition to treatment services, CATG emphasizes prevention through:

  • Youth programs and culture camps
  • Community education
  • Early Head Start programming that supports healthy child development
  • Building protective factors in families and communities

Ongoing Commitment

The need for healing is ongoing. CATG remains committed to expanding and improving behavioral health services, reducing stigma around mental health, and supporting community wellness in all its dimensions.

Together, the communities are working toward a future where all members can experience physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.
