IHS Tribal Management

One of the most significant milestones in CATG’s history was assuming management of healthcare services previously administered by the Indian Health Service (IHS).

The Vision for Tribal Healthcare

For too long, healthcare services in the Yukon Flats were administered by distant federal agencies with limited understanding of the unique needs, cultural context, and geographic challenges of the region. The tribes envisioned a better way: locally-controlled healthcare that combined modern medical services with cultural understanding.

Self-Governance Compact

Through the tribal self-governance process, CATG entered into a compact with the federal government to assume management of IHS programs. This transfer of authority allowed CATG to:

  • Hire and train local staff who understand the communities
  • Integrate traditional healing practices with modern medicine
  • Tailor services to meet the specific needs of each village
  • Improve accountability to tribal governments and community members

Yukon Flats Health Center

CATG operates the Yukon Flats Health Center, providing comprehensive healthcare services including:

  • Primary medical care
  • Dental services
  • Behavioral health
  • Pharmacy services
  • Diagnostic and radiology services
  • Tele-medicine capabilities

Village Clinics

In addition to the main health center, CATG operates village clinics in remote communities, ensuring that all tribal members have access to healthcare close to home.

Community Health Aide Program (CHA/P)

CATG trains and employs Community Health Aides who provide frontline healthcare in village settings. This program has been crucial in making healthcare accessible throughout the region.

Measuring Success

Since assuming IHS management, CATG has worked to improve health outcomes across all service areas. The organization tracks monthly health measures and continuously works to enhance the quality and accessibility of care.
